Friday Night All-Stars: Week 9 Preview

Updated: Nov 26, 2021

Prediction Records

Tyson Nelson: 14 – 18 – 0 Previous Week: 1-7-0

Trevor Cook: 16 – 16 – 0 Previous Week: 2-6-0

Match #1 – Bartram vs. LaMonica

These two teams are headed in opposite directions as Team LaMonica dropped out of first place after a Week 8 loss, while Team Bartram jumped up in the standings after a much-needed win. Despite this, Team Bartram still lacks a consistent anchor bowler due to the continual absence of Cordell Galbecka. Assuming Team Bartram has an anchor bowler this week, they still come in as heavy underdogs. At every position Team LaMonica has at least a 10-point advantage, with the largest one coming at leadoff where Cyndie Barnett comes in with a staggering 27-point advantage over Colton Harris.

Key Matchup

This match will require some heavy lifting from the top half of Team Bartram, Colton Harris and Derek Sanderson, as they come in a combined 57 points lower in average than Team LaMonica’s top half of Cyndie Barnett and Jeff Bradshaw. If these two can’t close the gap, I don’t see much chance of their team taking the win.

Tyson’s Pick: Team LaMonica

Trevor’s Pick: Team LaMonica

Match #2 – Enns vs. Youzwa

Both teams come into this week fresh off much needed wins, Team Youzwa to climb up in the standings and Team Enns to not allow themselves to fall further down. Garry Bell and Glen Howarth had bounce back weeks and should expect to see them build on that this week. The momentum still favours Team Youzwa who is coming off a 26-point week where they dominated. This match is fairly balanced with Team Youzwa favoured at the anchor position as Colton Youzwa is a consistent threat to go off, but they also have the disadvantage at second with Jenna Gillrie still very much a wildcard as to how she will bowl.

Key Matchup

Glen Howarth and Jenna Gillrie will be the key focuses of this match. Jenna is still averaging a fair amount below her draft average and it has yet to be seen if that is the product of a slow start or a longer struggle for the season. Glen has been up and down over the past few weeks, so whether it is 900 or 1100 Glen will make a big difference.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Youzwa

Trevor’s Pick: Team Enns

Match #3 – B Jeffers vs. Cousins

Two teams on small winning streaks, Team Cousins winning their last two and Team B. Jeffers winning their last four. Team Cousins boasts a top half that are almost interchangeable at the moment with both Gillian LaMonica and Shannon Pruden hovering around the 199-average mark, and the same can be said for Char McIvor and Cindy Cousins in the bottom of the lineup, both at 216. Cindy has been making a push in recent weeks, averaging 245 for her last two. Adam Williamson continues to climb in the second position and will be a challenging match for Shannon.

Key Matchup

This match is fairly even for the top three bowlers, the biggest hurdle for Team Cousins comes at anchor, where Char McIvor sits at a 42-pin disadvantage against Tyson Nelson. Char will need a big week or some support from her team to try and offset the difference.

Tyson’s Pick: Team B. Jeffers

Trevor’s Pick: Team B. Jeffers

Match #4 – Cook vs. Orne

These two teams that are coming off very close matches last week. Team Orne battled back in the last game to take the grand total as well as a couple individual totals. Team Cook was however on the other end of that situation and despite a phenomenal performance from Alyssa Campbell they were not able to hold onto the win. Both teams featured bowlers in the second position, Jayson May and David Wastle, who struggled throughout the night. This match will include two women who are coming off strong weeks; Alyssa Campbell of Team Cook who shot an 1129, and Team Orne’s Jennifer Duncan propelled herself into the second position with a 951 week.

Key Matchup

Watch for a battle in the third position. You have captain Linda Orne versus league rookie Alyssa Campbell, both are coming off a successful Masters tournament on the weekend and it should be a grind of a night, no easy wins here. Linda has been the most challenging player to beat this season, only having given her opponents a total of 5.5 points through eight weeks.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Cook

Trevor’s Pick: Team Cook

Match #5 – Gelardi vs. Hurd

The current top team in the league, Team Gelardi taking on the top team from the first seven weeks, Team Hurd. Team Hurd has been crumbling like a dried-up cookie the last couple weeks, taking a combined 16 points off of two teams in the bottom half of the standings. That being said, I would expect a bounce back week from Brett Hendrickson and Chad Hurd, last week was an abnormally low one for both of them. Team Gelardi should be expected to jump all over them if they continue to struggle. Added competition will come from the third matchups tonight as the Hendrickson brothers go head-to-head, this will be the second matchup against each other this season already. Brett took the first one.

Key Matchup

The key to this match will be the bottom half of the lineups, Brett Hendrickson comes in as the favourite versus his brother Robbie Hendrickson but Robbie’s anchor Dwayne Gelardi is the favourite versus the opposing captain Chad Hurd. Of note, Dwayne is coming off a low week and already averaging lower than expected from him, law of averages says he is due for a big week.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Gelardi

Trevor’s Pick: Team Gelardi

Match #6 – Lourenco vs. King

Team Lourenco has taken a nosedive over the last three weeks with only 27.5 points during that span. They will hope to stop the bleeding tonight against a King team that sits in a similar spot in the standings, both hoping to fight their way back to the top half of the league. Only a select few bowlers between these two teams bowled well last week, most notably Dave Duncan shooting a 943, a nice bounce back from his previous week. This match is honestly quite even in every position, no distinct advantages. At anchor I would give a slight edge to Ethan Buckman as he has been one of the most consistent bowlers all season and typically you need to be over that 240 threshold every game to have a chance.

Key Matchup

I would say watch the top half of the lineups. Both leadoffs come in with similar averages, so it will really come down to who gets hot between Chris Fedorchuk and Sam Hunt. The same can be said for the match between Patrick Walker and Dave Duncan, two guys averaging below their draft average and due for big weeks.

Tyson’s Pick: Team King

Trevor’s Pick: Team King

Match #7 – C. Jeffers vs. Rodych

This will be a match to determine who truly is the last place team in this league. Only four points

separates Team Rodych from long standing last place team, Team C. Jeffers. Injuries plague this matchup with Corey Chaikowski sidelined, and likely have Anthony Novak spare for him, as well as Amanda Devenney not quite being at 100% either. Captain Matt Rodych as the lone average over 220 in this match will be looked upon to provide some big games and hopefully support his team to fend off a C. Jeffers team that is slowly gaining some traction. Chris Jeffers has continued to find consistency this year but I will make the hot take that this week will be over 900 for him.

Key Matchup

I think the matchup to watch will be Tim Hooper versus Amanda Devenney. Normally I would call Amanda the clear favourite but between not being at 100% and life becoming increasingly hectic I am not sure how that may factor in. Plus, on the other side Tim Hooper has had a fairly solid past couple weeks averaging 217 over that span, turning around a slow start to the season.

Tyson’s Pick: Team C. Jeffers

Trevor’s Pick: Team Rodych

Match #8 – Devenney vs. Stevenson

These two teams are both coming off winning weeks and are right in the middle of the standings, so this game could have big consequences if one team can dominate tonight. Tyler Reynolds continues to be one of the toughest players to beat this season, sweeping yet another opponent last week. Mike Devenney will need to bounce back from his 688-performance last week if he hopes to put a dent in Tyler’s winning ways. Jayden Nickerson will be jumping into the second position after shooting a big 971 as the leadoff in Week 8. Team Devenney has been a rollercoaster when it comes to scores the past few weeks. I would expect more than the 3158 they put up last week, but we haven’t seen anyone from their team shooting consistently well.

Key Matchup

Team Stevenson comes in at an advantage in three out of four positions, and I think the one that could have the biggest impact is at anchor. Dylan Stevenson is coming off a strong Masters showing on the weekend and that should carry into this week after he has been absent the previous two weeks. His opponent, Jennifer Devenney, has struggled of late and will need to find her rhythm to keep her team in it if Dylan continues to shoot the way he has been.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Stevenson

Trevor’s Pick: Team Stevenson

Fun Fact: After 8 weeks, only 12 out of 64 bowlers are higher than their draft average.
