Friday Night All-Stars: Week 20 Preview

Prediction Records

Tyson Nelson: 68 – 44 – 0 Previous Week: 7-1-0

Trevor Cook: 67 – 45 – 0 Previous Week: 5-3-0

Match #1 – Lourenco vs. Gelardi

Both teams coming off big wins last week. Team Gelardi is in second in the aggregate standings while Team Lourenco continues to slowly close the gap to the top half of the league. This match will see Ethan Buckman swap positions with captain Belle Lourenco and return to anchor, where he will hope to put a little pressure on Dwayne Gelardi. Dwayne remains to have the highest win percentage this season meaning he is very difficult guy to beat. A big factor in this one will be the health and quality of bowling we will see from Wayne Wolanski who is recently returned from injury. As long as he can keep it around the 800-mark and up he should be right in his matchup.

Key Matchup

I’d keep an eye out on the third matchup that sees Robbie Hendrickson take on Belle Lourenco. Both players have been on small slumps over the past few weeks; with Belle averaging 210 over her last two and with Robbie averaging 202 over his last five. I think this will be a match of endurance, Team Gelardi is known for having big finishes so if Belle can fend off any late game heroics from Robbie, she should be a big assist for her team.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Lourenco

Trevor’s Pick: Team Gelardi

Match #2 – Youzwa vs. Devenney

I hate to sound like a broken record but Team Devenney enters once again as the underdogs, currently riding their ten-week losing streak. However, Team Youzwa is coming off an absolute thrashing of a night that saw them take only four points. Both teams will be hoping for this to be a bounce back kind of night. Team Youzwa holds a heavy advantage at anchor with Colton Youzwa providing fairly consistent bowling night in and night out. Team Devenney will look to Neil Stewart and Mike Devenney to try and balance things out versus Mark Prystupa and Jenna Gillrie. With Mike back in the second position, I think he should be a very competitive match, if not the favourite over Jenna who has only averaged 200 over the last three weeks.

Key Matchup

The thirds are going to be a really big factor in this match. Holly Chaikowski has been putting up solid numbers of late, averaging 222 over her last five weeks. She will need to keep up those kinds of numbers if she wants to push back against Chloe Fleming who has a distinct 25-pin advantage and has been one of the most successful thirds all season. If Holly can keep it close, it will be a big boost to her team staying in this match.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Youzwa

Trevor’s Pick: Team Youzwa

Match #3 – C. Jeffers vs. Stevenson

Team C. Jeffers comes in currently sitting in 3rd in the second half and with back-to-back wins to boot. They seem to have really turned a new leaf since Anthony Novak joined the team. They will be tested this week though by the well-rounded lineup of Team Stevenson. Erik Stewart at leadoff has been very successful of late, averaging 216 over his last four weeks, and I would expect that trend to continue against Al Bristow tonight. Team C. Jeffers has had success from all parts of their lineup, usually two of them going off every week. This week might be one of those nights where they need at least three solid performances. Janna Van Walleghem is filling in for Anthony Novak tonight at anchor where she will come in favoured over Dylan Stevenson who has looked quite shaky the past four weeks averaging just over 210.

Key Matchup

The matchup at the third position once again will be crucial. Tim Hooper who has been bowling quite well to start 2022, but comes against someone who has been on an even hotter streak, Jayden Nickerson. Jayden has put up 1000+ weeks in two of his last four. This matchup will simply come down to who stays consistent on the night, both guys can put up solid numbers, but it will be the one who keeps the low games to a minimum who will be victorious.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Stevenson

Trevor’s Pick: Team Stevenson

Match #4 – B. Jeffers vs. King

Team B. Jeffers has taken a nose dive in the standings the past couple weeks dropping from third to fifth in aggregate, while team King holds down the final spot in the A-side with a 11-point lead on 9th. Despite a dreadful night last week from Scott Saunderson, I would still give him the slight edge over Chris Fedorchuk at leadoff. The second position will see Patrick Walker take on Adam Williamson. Both bowlers are wildcards, with Patrick having a touch higher score over the past few weeks. The top two positions basically balance each other out. Team King will really be able to do some damage in the third position, especially after Karen Armstrong is coming off her best night of the season.

Key Matchup

This match will ultimately come down to how close the anchor matchup between Wayne King and Tyson Nelson is, and how much support both players get from their top three. Wayne will come in as the underdog in his individual matchup but Tyson has not had a whole lot of support the past couple weeks with no one else on the team putting up a score over 830. If Team B. Jeffers can put together some big games in the top three positions, they should provide adequate support to get the win.

Tyson’s Pick: Team B. Jeffers

Trevor’s Pick: Team B. Jeffers

Match #5 – Rodych vs. Cousins

These two teams have both had their struggles this season. Team Rodych has since found a little bit of life since Lexie Sutherland has joined the team, winning of their last four. Team Cousins has been held back by the lack of big scores required to beat some of the more competitive teams. Team Cousins still holds a strong grip on the top two positions but the bottom two is where this match will be won or loss. Lexie Sutherland has been shooting very well since joining the team full time and could be considered one of the top thirds in the league, a big obstacle for Char McIvor to overcome no doubt. As of late both Cindy Cousins and Matt Rodych have been very unpredictable, but both are always threats to shoot over 1000 on any given night.

Key Matchup

Watch the anchors tonight, if they stay close this should be a very tight match. If one anchor manages to pull away it will certainly put pressure on the rest of the opposing team. I predict we will see at least one of them over 1000 on the night.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Rodych

Trevor’s Pick: Team Rodych

Match #6 – Orne vs. Hurd

This will be probably the best match to watch all night. These two teams have really pushed themselves up the standings in the second half and both are still hungry for more points. At leadoff Team Orne comes in with an advantage on paper with Jennifer Duncan coming off a strong week, but Ryan Bannerman has put up 900+ weeks in three of his last four making him a dangerous threat right now. David Wastle comes in as the hottest second in the second half so far, putting up a staggering 237 average so far. Team Hurd will have to rely on some help from their bottom two positions to provide a sturdy foundation. Team Hurd in my mind has a little more big-game potential from Brett Hendrickson and Kevin Naugler, while Linda Orne and Darren Maxwell provide a more consistent well-rounded kind of night.

Key Matchup

Watch the seconds, David Wastle versus Chelsea, who is sparing for Chad Hurd. With David being on the tear he has been its hard to see him being beat in this one. The key here will be for Chelsea to keep it close and really put the pressure on him, see if she can make him slip up a bit.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Orne

Trevor’s Pick: Team Hurd

Match #7 – Bartram vs. Enns

Team Bartram remains as one of two winless teams currently in the second half and will look to turn things around tonight versus Team Enns. It will not be easy though as they come in outgunned in every position. Especially with no consistency in the third position, team Bartram is left in a tough position. Jeston Bartram can be a big game threat when he finds his rhythm but he will need that just to keep even pace with Glen Howarth tonight. Team Enns is coming off a slow night but that might be even more reason to be concerned as law of averages say they should be going up from there. The toughest matchup will come at second with Colton Harris taking on Garry Bell in what is a landslide matchup on paper.

Key Matchup

No specific matchups to look at really. The key to this match will be big games from the top three on Team Bartram and if not that, consistently above average games all night, no real room for those low low games. If Glen Howarth beats up on Jeston too bad tonight, Team Bartram will just be in survival mode trying to keep the damage to a minimum.

Tyson’s Pick: Team Enns

Trevor’s Pick: Team Enns

Match #8 – Cook vs. LaMonica

Team LaMonica once again sits at the pinnacle of the league, while team Cook still looks on from outside the top eight. Team LaMonica is going to give themselves a big head start tonight at leadoff with Cyndie Barnett holding a 30-pin advantage over Dave Priestley. From there most of the matchups are fairly close. Team LaMonica has just had more consistency as a team this season while Team Cook usually has one bowler do well and the rest either around average or below average. I think the battle in the bottom two positions will be quite intense. You have four shooters; Alyssa Campbell, Trevor Cook, Andrew LaMonica and Sam Gelardi, who can all put up 1100+ nights. The big decider in this one will be who gets in the zone early as that will carry through to the rest of the night.

Key Matchup

The thirds in my mind are the biggest wildcard in this match. Both Alyssa and Andrew have big game capability but have both have also had their ups and downs this season. As of late Alyssa has been the more consistent shooter putting up five straight 900+ weeks, but also none over 1000. Andrew on the other hand has had a couple weeks over 1000 recently but also a few low 800 nights as well. I think which Andrew shows up will be a big momentum either way.

Tyson’s Pick: Team LaMonica

Trevor’s Pick: Team Cook
